GUY YOUSPHAN

My practice can be divided into two distinct categories that complement each other. With pop art, I play with known and unknown images, vibrant colours and shapes to create a safe, light zone and let go of deeper meanings. On the other hand, in my mystic work I join the eternal dance between the imagination, reality and the creative process, allowing images, symbols and ideas across time and place to stream through my mind and connect in unpredictable ways – which I do not attempt to understand, but nonetheless appreciate in wonder.
Over the years, I have worked with diverse mediums including oil, watercolour, acrylic, pencil and resin on a multitude of surfaces. Making friends with these mediums has allowed me to find different ways to tell a visual story. I do not limit myself to a particular style or technique, and prefer to create in response to a message or circumstances. I also sometimes find myself making street art when the mood is right, or when I need to say something in the moment, and then witness it gradually take a life of its own.
I believe that creativity is an act of trust in the process. Like the branches of an olive tree, I twirl around my dreams and visions, letting this path lead me deep down and high up. Not always knowing where I am going or what I should do, I offer myself as a medium to both ancient memories and new visions that reflect through me. I can ponder a work for days or months, but always trust the intuitive process of unearthing and uncovering clues to the big mystery we are all enveloped in. I hope that by following my heart and passion, my work can speak to the vibrancy of my life and vision.
I was born in Israel in 1971, and consider myself a self-taught artist despite some education from art institutes and other artists both in Israel and New York. I have participated in several group shows in Israel at galleries including Florentin 45, Miss D. Gallery and the Ilana Goor Museum, as well as internationally at Cork Street, London, and Target Gallery in Virginia.
